The Ultimate 3 day Guide to Zion National Park
Nestled in the heart of the southwestern United States, Zion National Park stands as a testament to the breathtaking beauty of nature. With its towering red cliffs, lush canyons, and diverse wildlife, Zion offers an unparalleled experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Among the myriad of adventures that await, two hikes stand out as iconic and unforgettable: Angels Landing and The Narrows.
Where to Camp at Zion National Park
Okay, guys. This is the BEST place to camp. Trust me.. I’ve camped at dozens of campgrounds and this campground has the best view.
It’s actually technically not a “campground” it is dispersed camping. So this is for those who love to camp and not be around other people. There are no hookups or anything like that.. so pure OFF ROAD CAMPING. My kind of camping.
Now, when you get to this road, you can honestly just camp anywhere off the side of the road as long as you’re at least 6 feet off the road! So awesome.
**Campground tip: you’ll want to plan to get here in the daylight so you can find a campground with a good view AND finding a campground in daylight is way more enjoyable than finding a campground in pitch dark. Trust me, we’ve done that and it is not a pretty sight.
Zion National Park Hikes
Day 1: Angels Landing:
Angels Landing is perhaps the most iconic hike in Zion National Park, and for good reason. This thrilling trail combines awe-inspiring views with a challenging ascent, creating an unforgettable journey for hikers. The trail begins at the Grotto Trailhead and winds its way through the Virgin River, eventually leading to the challenging switchbacks known as Walter’s Wiggles.
As you ascend, the landscape transforms, offering panoramic views of the towering sandstone cliffs and the lush valley below. The final stretch involves navigating a narrow ridge with sheer drop-offs on both sides, providing an adrenaline rush and a sense of accomplishment for those who conquer it.
Standing atop Angels Landing, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree vista that includes the Virgin River, the valley floor, and the surrounding red rock formations. The experience is nothing short of awe-inspiring, making Angels Landing a must-do for those seeking a thrilling adventure in Zion.
Day 2 The Narrows:
For a completely different but equally enchanting experience, venture into The Narrows. This unique hike takes you into the heart of Zion Canyon, where you’ll find yourself wading through the Virgin River as towering canyon walls surround you on both sides. The Narrows is a hike unlike any other, as the trail is the river itself. Like the ENTIRE trail is this river (pictured above) and you’re literally walking 12 miles in water on rocks (lol). But I truly have to say it’s a very cool experience!
Equipped with sturdy water shoes and a walking stick, you’ll be able to navigate through the cool, ankle-waist deep water, gradually deepening (sometimes you’re swimming) as the canyon narrows. The sheer beauty of the towering walls and the interplay of light on the water create a majestic beauty all around you.
The diversity of The Narrows means that every step reveals something new – from narrow slots that barely allow sunlight to larger sections where the canyon opens up, providing a unique perspective of the geological wonders that have been carved over millennia.
Day 3 Observation point:
Set your alarms because on the last morning you’re going to head out for a sunrise hike to Observation Point. This is a 7 mile round trip hike, out and back, so you’ll want to plan accordingly with sunrise.
I know, I know, sometimes getting up so early is HARD, but trust me when I tell you the sunrise over the canyon is BEYOND worth your early alarm clock!
After this hike you can head back to your campground, cook some breakfast, pack up and hit the road to get home for Sunday night (or whatever night you’re traveling!).
Tips for Hikers:
- Preparation is Key: Both Angels Landing and The Narrows require some level of preparation. Ensure you have the appropriate gear, including sturdy footwear and a walking stick for The Narrows.
- Pack two pairs of hiking shoes in case your shoes from the Narrows don’t dry the next day
- Pack hiking poles: Andrew and I both used just one hiking pole and felt that was totally fine.
- Start Early: To beat the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures, start your hike early in the morning, especially during the warmer months.
- Check Conditions: The Narrows can be affected by weather conditions, so be sure to check for flash flood warnings before embarking on this adventure.
Zion National Park, with its stunning landscapes and diverse hiking opportunities, offers a playground for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Angels Landing and The Narrows epitomize the park’s beauty and challenge, providing experiences that will be etched in your memory forever. Whether you’re seeking a heart-pounding adventure or a serene immersion in nature, Zion has something for everyone, making it a must-visit destination for any avid hiker or lover of the great outdoors.
